GENEALOGY OF THE PHILIP E. LINN FAMILY (below this letter)


 This letter, for your enjoyment, was received from a researcher of the Long/Bradney family in 1999; all spelling and punctuation are as in the original letter.


August 19 1866
Mr. John Bradney and friends I now take up my pen to wright you a few lines.  I received your and Silvester letters.  I was glad to hear from you. You want to know something about Oregon you want to know about the health of the country. It is the healthest place that I ever liven in there is plenty of pure runing water teir is plenty of timber.  The principal kind is fur there is some seder oak and ash you want to know if there is any vacant land west of Cascades there is plenty of land vacant but all the best claims is taken up you can by land cheap Second handed from $2.00 to 10.00 per acre produce wheat and oats peas and potatoes grow the finest here of anyplace I ever saw corn and vines do not grow so well.  But fruit there is no end to it  Well John it is hard for me to tell you much about the country all that I have seen of it Mountains valleys springs breaking out all along the foots of the mountains now you want to know how I like the country now I will tell you what I like about it  I like the climate it being neither cold nor hot the land is generaly rich the timber is verry good tall and strait and the water is as good as ever run out of the ground now you would like to know what I do not like the rainy season  it rains a grate deal through the winter season the rodes are very bad across the mountains there is not much good rock it being all round boulders  now John if you and Caroline was out here I think you would have your health beter and you could do well a working at your trade.  A carpenter gets from $2.00 to $4.00 a day the crops is good wheat 75 pr bu. Oats 59cts bacon 15 pr pound potatoes 40cts now if you and Silvester want to come to this country if you come by land mule teams is a great dele the best.  A light 2 horse waggon but stout if by water you can come to the Oregon Citty on the Willamet river we live 16 miles from that place in Clackamus Co.  me and the (boys) have bought 3 farms 900 acres in all the boys has got a sawmill I should have wrote you soner I wanted to see the grain ripe we are in the mist of a harves wheat is better than ever I saw in Illinois we have been here about 10 months we have all had health well I have had better than common this summer now John I cannot urge you to come out here the road is verry long and tegious you could come by water sooner and a great eisear wright to me soon and let me know wherher you are come or not write anny how I do not kno whether you can read this or not it is so badly

PHILIP EDMOND LINN, son of William Lynn/Linn (1) and Elizabeth Laird was born in Sandy Lake Twp., PA. 25/November/1811.  Philip died 01/February/1886 in Clackamas Co., OR. at 74 years of age.  His body was interred in Estacada, OR. Wade Cemetery. (aka Philip E. Linn Cemetery & The Pioneer Cemetery)
He married twice.  He married MAHALA MCDANNALD in Nicholas Co., KY 19/May/1831.  Mahala was the daughter of John Thomas McDannald and Margaret McMickell.  Mahala died 10/April 1859 in Illinois at 46 years of age of heart disease of four years duration.  Her body was interred in Buckhorn Township, IL. Linn Cemetery, which was founded by Philip in 1849.  The epitaph on Mahala Linn's tombstone reads: The pains of death are passed...Labor and sorrows cease....And lifes long warfare closed at last...Her soul is found in paradise.


Their children are:
(1)     ELIZABETH ANN LINN was born in Nicholas Co., KY. 10/March/1832, she married FREDERICK E. BULLARD in Brown Co., IL., 09/February/1850.  Elizabeth died of a nervous disorder at 47 years of age.  Her body was interred in Estacada, OR. Wade Cemetery.  Frederick was the son of John Bullard (1) and Fannie Quisenberry.  Frederick died 08/January/1900 at 73 years of age.  His body was interred in Estacada, Or. Wade Cemetery.  ELIZABETH ANN LINN AND FREDERICK E. BULLARD were the parents of eleven children.


(2)     MARGARET JANE LINN was born in Nicholas Co., Ky., 01/December/1833.  She married TIMOTHY C. BOWEN in Brown Co., IL, 03/August/1860.  Timothy was born in Nicholas Co., KY. 07/October/1833.  Margaret died 06/February/1901 at 67 years of age.  Her body is interred in Estacada, OR. Wade Cemetery.  Timothy died 09/March/1907 at 73 years of age of pneumonia/chronic asthma.  His body is also interred in Estacada, OR. Wade Cemetery.  MARGARET JANE LINN and TIMOTHY C. BOWEN were the parents of four children.


(3)     WILLIAM THOMPSON LINN was born in Nicholas Co., Ky., 13/September/1835.  He married SARAH AGNES BRIGGLE in Brown County, IL 12/September/1856.  Sarah was born in Marion Co., Ohio 15/October 1831.  Sarah was the daughter of Christian Briggle and Matilda Fair.  William Thompson Linn died 28/November/1909 at 74 years of general debility.  His body was interred in Portland, OR, Rose City Cemetery.  Sarah died 27/April/1907 in Portland, Multnomah Co., OR, at 75 years of age of carcinoma of the stomach.  Her body is also interred in Portland, OR. Rose City Cemetery.  WILLIAM THOMPSON LINN AND SARAH (BRIGGLE) LINN were the parents of eight children.


(4)     MARTHA MATILDA LINN was born in Nicholas Co., Ky., 07/February/1837.  Martha married JOHNATHAN LONSBERRY in Brown Co., IL. 15/May/1860.  Jonathan was born in Oakford, IL. 02/September/1836.  Jonathan was the son of Matthew Lonsberry (1) and Sally Pratt.  Martha died 23/August/1865 on the Oregon Trail at American Falls, ID. at 28 years of mountain fever otherwise known as heatstroke.  Jonathan Lonsberry died 26/September/1865 on the Oregon Trail close to Bakeoven, OR. at 29 years of age of consumption also known as tuberculosis.  MARTHA MATILDA LINN AND JOHNATHAN LONSBERRY were the parents of three children.


(5)     NANCY CATHERINE LINN was born in Quincy, IL. 28/May/1839.  Nancy married WILLIAM HENRY SHANKLAND in Brown Co., IL. William was born in Frankfort, KY., 08/March/1834.  William was the son of Andrew Gibb Shankland and Judith Ann Stoops.  Nancy died 08/July/1916 at 77 years of age.  Her body was interred in Estacada, Or. Wade Cemetery.  William died 08/ June/1906 at 71 years of age.  His body is also interred in Estacada, OR. Wade Cemetery.  NANCY CATHERINE AND WILLIAM HENRY SHANKLAND were the parents of six children.


(6)     JOHN ALEXANDER LINN was born in Mt. Sterling, IL. 30/October/1843.  He married Nancy A. Briggs in Brown Co., IL. 16/September/1913.  Nancy was the daughter of William Briggs and Sarah Ann Brake.  John died 24/September/1913 in Brown Co., IL. at 69 years of age.  His body was interred in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co., IL. City Cemetery.  Nancy died 09/October/1900 at 55 years of age.  Her body is also interred in Mt. Sterling, IL. City Cemetery.  JOHN ALEXANDER LINN AND NANCY A. (BRIGGS) LINN were the parents of five children.


(7)     MARY ELLEN LINN in Mt. Sterling, IL. 08/October/1844.  She married JOHN J. GARD in Clackamas Co., OR. 11/April/1867.  John was the son of Timothy Gard and Mahala. Mary died 18/October/1915 at 71 years of age of intestinal problems.  Her body was interred at Clarkes Pioneer Cemetery.  John J. died 24/April/1913 in OR. at 75 years of age of a dilated heart/old age.  His body was also interred at Clarkes Pioneer Cemetery with Mary, Burial row 12 Plot 146.  MARY ELLEN LINN AND JOHN J. GARD were the parents of seven children.


(8)     BENJAMIN FRANKLIN LINN (1) was born in Quincy, IL. 15/April/1846.  He married SUSAN CATHERINE NOYER in Clackamas Co., OR. 26/December/1869.  Susan was born in Texas 22/February/1853.  Susan was the daughter of Peter Noyer and Jane Sharrock.  Benjamin died 22/March/1918 of cardiac asthma at 71 years of age.  His body was interred in Oregon City, OR. First Addition-Lot 72 Grave 3, Mountain View Cemetery.  Susan died 12/November/1923 at 70 years of age of female cancer at her daughter's home.  She is interred in Oregon City, OR. First Addition-Lot 72 Grave 2, Mountain View Cemetery.  BENJAMIN FRANKLIN LINN and SUSAN CATHERINE (NOYER) LINN were the parents of nine children.


(9)     THOMAS J. LINN was born in Brown Co., IL. June/1848.  Thomas died 29/August/1848 in Brown Co., IL.  His body was interred in Buckhorn Twp., Brown Co., IL.  Thomas died of Cholera.


(10)  BABY DAUGHTER LINN was born in Buckhorn, IL.1848.  Baby died 02/August/1850 at two years of age.


(11)  SARAH ESTHER LINN was born in Buckhorn, IL 16/December/1849.  Sarah died 01/August/1852 at two years of age.  Her body was interred in Brown Co., IL. Linn Cemetery.


(12)  TIMOTHY (M.MCDANNALD) LINN was born in Brown Co., IL. 1851.  Timothy died 08/November/1865 at five years of age.  His body is interred in Buckhorn Twp. Brown Co., IL. Linn Cemetery.

(13)  MAHALA JOSEPHINE (Josie) LINN was born in Buckhorn, IL. 09/January/1852.  She married JOHN WESLEY MAY in Clackamas Co., OR. 01/January/1871.  John Wesley May was born in Dallas, TX 27/June/1847.  John was the son of Jeptha May and Amy Ann Sharrock.  Mahala died 08/September/1917 at 65 years of age.  John died 09/September/1921 at 74 years of age.  MAHALA JOSEPHINE (JOSIE) LINN and JOHN WESLEY MAY were the parents of thirteen children.


(14)  PHILIP EDMOND LINN (2) was born in Buckhorn, IL. 02/October/1853.  He died unmarried on 01/December/1936.  Philip received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1875.


(15)  GRANVILLE BOND LINN was born in Buckhorn, IL. 03/July/1856.  Granville married twice.  He married ANNA SMITH in Clackamas Co., Or. 01/November/1879.  Anna was born in Lahee, Scotland 15/December/1856.  Anna was the daughter of James Smith.  Anna died 15/February/1907 at 50 years of age.  Her body was interred in Estacada, Oregon, Wade-Linn Cemetery.  Granville then married ELIZABTH STEINMAN WEHRHEIM 07/May/1914.  Elizabeth was born in Evansville, IN.  25/March/1862.  Elizabeth died 19/February/1945.  Granville died 27/December/1937 at 81 years of age.  His body was interred in Estacada, OR. Wade-Linn Cemetery.  GRANVILLE BOND LINN and ANNA (SMITH) LINN were the parents of seven children.


(16)  CHARLOTTE LINN was born in Buckhorn, IL. 09/August/1858.  Charlotte married three times.  She married JOHN WILLIAM ALLISON in Clackamas Co., OR. 15/April/1877 at the home of J.P. Allison.  John was born in Iowa 26/June/1858.  John was the son of Joseph Perry Allison and Mary (Long) Peel.  John died 24/February/1886 at 27 years of age.  Charlotte married POLSER LAKE HUFFMAN in Clackamas Co., OR. 19/March/1887 at the house of E.P. Wright.  Polser was born in New Castle, VA. 17/January/1848.  Polser died 17/August/1928 in Dublin, Pulaski Co., VA at 80 years of age myocarditis-mitral insufficiency at the Fairview Home.  His body was interred in the Fairview Home Cemetery. Charlotte married DAVID MCKEE in Portland, OR. 30/September/1899 at the United Presbyterian Church.  David was born in KY. 23/May/1835.  David was the son of Jame McKee.  David died 15/August/1927 at 92 years of age.  His body was interred 19/August/1927 in Woodburn, OR. Belle Passi Cemetery.  CHARLOTTE LINN and JOHN WILLIAM ALLISON were parents of three children.  CHARLOTTE LINN and POLSER LAKE HUFFMAN were the parents of one child.  It is possible CHARLOTTE LINN and DAVID MCKEE had a male child with the name of LINN MCKEE who passed away before 1905.  CHARLOTTE (LINN) MCKEE DIED 27/September/1908 in Salem, Or. at 50 years of age of general paralysis at the Oregon State Insane Asylum.  Her body was interred 29/September/1908 at Clarkes Pioneer Cemetery.
PHILIP LINN married CHRISTENA (TENA OR TENAH) LONG in Brown Co., IL. 18/January/1860.  Christena was born in PA. 23/August/1818.  Christena was the daughter of Tobias Long and Jane Crozier.  Christena died 08/August/1891 of relapsing fever; she is interred in Estacada, Clackamas Co., OR. Wade Cemetery.


PHILIP and CRISTENA were the parents of:
(1)     JAMES OLIVER LINN was born in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co., IL. 14/October/1860.  He married MARY LOUVERBLE (VERB) PALMATEER in Clackamas Co., Or. 22/December/1893.  James died 24/October/1931 in Marion Co., OR. at 71 years of age.  His body was interred in Estacada, OR.  Mary was born in Eagle Creek, OR. 04/April/1875.  Mary was the daughter of Richard G. Palmateer and Emma Jane Epperson.  Her body was interred in Garfield, Clackamas Co., OR.  JAMES OLIVER LINN and MARY LOUVERBLE (VERB) (PALMATEER) LINN were the parents of one child. 


(2)     TOBIAS EVERETT LINN was born in Mt. Sterling, IL. 18/December/1862.  He married MELVINA SYBLE PALMATEER in Clackamas Co., OR. 26/December/1890.  Melvina was born in Eagle Creek, OR. 03/December/1875.  Melvina was the daughter of Seth M. Palmateer and Mary Jane Ward.  Tobias died December 1925 in Aberdeen, Washington in a logging accident.  Melvina died 30/July/1949 at 73 years of age.  TOBIAS EVERETT LINN and MELVINA SYBLE PALMATEER were the parents of two children.
